Set up a Chromebook for Offline Usage

Enabling and Using a Chromebook While Offline

 

Open Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides offline

  1. Open Chrome. Make sure you're signed in to Chrome.

  2. Go to drive.google.com/drive/settings.

  3. Check the box next to "Sync Google Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drawings files to this computer so that you can edit offline." The box looks like this:

  1. On your computer, go to drive.google.com.

  2. Right click the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file you want to save offline.

  3. Turn on "Available offline." Shown below:

Your Doc, Sheet, or Slide can now be accessed by opening the Drive or Docs app. 

Enable Gmail Offline

You have the ability to enable gmail offline so you can check emails even without an internet connection.  The following steps will show you how to do this.

  1. Go to Gmail offline settings.

  2. Check "Enable offline mail."

  3. Choose your settings, such as how many days of messages you want to sync.

  4. Click Save changes.

Note: The below screenshot shows the settings you want to select.  In the drop down select 7 days, and check Download attachments. Also, select the circle that says Keep offline data on my computer.  Don’t forget to click Save Changes.

View Google Drive Videos Offline

Google Drive videos can be enabled for offline viewing by downloading the video.  It can then be found by opening the Files app on the Chromebook, and navigating to downloads.  

View Webpages Offline

Any webpage can be saved to a device to be read later, even without an internet connection.  This can be extremely useful in making sure information and class resources are available. This can be done by following the steps below:

 

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.

  2. Go to a page you want to save.

  3. At the top right, click More More and then More Tools and then Save page as.

  4. Choose where you want to save the page.

  5. Click Save.

Wherever you saved the page, it will now be accessible there by opening the Files app, navigating to the page, and opening it. 

 

Signing in to a Chromebook without Internet

When you boot up a Chromebook without Internet you will see the screen shown below

 

Select “sign in as existing user” and  enter your email and password.  

 

Notes:

If the above steps were followed you will now have access to any files, videos, emails, and web pages that you had made available.

Additions made to files offline will be synced as soon as an internet connection is reestablished.
